Recap of the unforgiving ROOT Tournament

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, the 2nd edition of the Recap of the unforgiving ROOT Tournament took place at Pub Abyss in Montreal!

43 Quebecois fans of the famous asymmetric game Root gathered under one roof to participate in a tournament organized by Jean-François Pellerin of Tournoi Root Steam/app and Marc Beaudoin of Îlo.

Participants arrived around 12:00 PM and were given name tags containing 2 hidden promotional cards behind their name cards. One card to add to their base deck and a vagabond created by the organizers of the French Root Championship.

Just like last year, we were fortunate to have Raphaël Lacaille from Es-tu game? as a player. He took the opportunity to capture some photos and videos of the event!

After a welcome message from the organizers and a reminder of the rules, all participants took their seats at their respective tables, among the 10 that had been pre-designed based on their top 3 favorite factions. The games were all set up the same way: autumn board, standard card deck, standard setup.

Around 1:00 PM, the first round began with tables of 4 or 5 players, depending on their chosen faction configurations. There was a lot of negotiation, tension, and, most importantly, fun.

Around 5:00 PM, the 10 winners of the first round were randomly distributed across 2 tables prepared with the lake board, exile deck, supporters, and advanced setup.

The two finals then began after some very interesting faction drafts.

Meanwhile, players who lost in the first round had the opportunity to challenge themselves with a special endgame Root puzzle designed for the event. Root games were also available for friendly matches outside the tournament. Some even had time to play 3 games of Root in a single day. Four participants also had the opportunity to play the beautiful game OATH by Leder Games.

Around 8:45 PM, the two finals concluded with very close scores.

We then proceeded to award prizes to the winners and conduct raffle draws for participation prizes.

As announced before the event, everything concluded around 9:00 PM. Many satisfied players were already looking forward to the next edition, which is expected to take place in the spring of 2024!

Congratulations to the two winners, Pierre-Olivier Brissaud and Julien Robert.

Thanks to Îlo and Matagot for their generosity in both the prizes offered and the games provided for the event. Thanks to Pub Abyss for hosting us for the second consecutive year.

This 2nd edition was a success, and we can't wait to see you again next year!
